Meet Saharra

Saharra Dixon, MA, CHES

Founder/Artistic Director

Hello! My name is Saharra, and I’m the Founder and Artistic Director of Soul Circle LLC. I am a Certified Health Education Specialist, Community-engaged Theatre Artist, Writer, and Arts-based Participatory Researcher based in Southern New Jersey and New York City.  I am in awe by the arts’ ability to heal, educate, and inspire across cultures and communities. In my own arts in health practice, I use theatre techniques like play, devising, scripting, improvisation, physical theatre, Theatre of the Oppressed, Poetic Ritual Drama, and other theatre modalities to explore health and social justice issues with all age groups.

I meet people where they are. And that’s what Soul Circle is all about. Meeting women and Girls exactly where they are, and offering tools that will help them reclaim the power in their lives. I believe the arts can be used as a powerful tool for behavioral & social change, as I guide our participants in their own change processes. I am skilled in exploring issues in Reproductive Justice, Maternal/Child Health, Adolescent Health, Minority Health, and Sexual Health.

Through Soul Circle, I am able to bring my love of art and healing to my community. My role here is as Artistic Director, as well as offering select theatre/drama workshops and arts-based Health Coaching. Much of my work focuses on a “social justice as public health” framework. I always aim to question and dismantle systems and institutions that perpetuate oppression.

More About Me

I grew up in a small town called Atco, NJ with my parents, an older sister, and an adorable Shih Tzu. I began training as a performing artist at New Freedom Theatre in Philadelphia, PA (under the direction of Walter Dallas and Patricia Scott-Hobbs), and continued working with many amazing artists and teachers at University of Delaware and New York University. I decided to explore Theatre in Health Education during my time at Delaware. I took many public health, medical anthropology, and sociology courses that inspired the connection. I’ve worked with New York University, University of Delaware, Planned Parenthood of Delaware, United Way of Delaware, and more! I’m currently working as a Sexuality and Reproductive Health Educator in Brooklyn.

I received my Master’s of Arts in Educational Theatre and Community-engaged Theatre from New York University, Bachelor of Science in Health Behavior Science from University of Delaware, and am a Certified Health Education Specialist as recognized by the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing (NCHEC).

Come celebrate with me that everyday something has tried to kill me and has failed.
